Pre-Treatment Information

Consent

Consent is one of those legal terms which has a lot of meanings and connotations.

In our practice, there are two areas.

The first has to do with treatment under sedation. Under the ACT Health Facilities Code Of Practice, as part of our documentation, we are required to complete a consent form, and we request that you sign this on the day of treatment.

For general treatment, completion of a consent form is not necessary.

What does this mean?

What this means is that irrespective of what treatment you are having, and whether or not it is under sedation, you should have a clear understanding of

-  Treatment options
-  What treatment you are having
-  Why you are having it
-  Risks
-  Benefits
-  What can go wrong
-  Costs

and anything else that may be related to it.

You should ask any questions you may have, and ideally you should ask these before any treatment is started.

If you are not happy with the information that you have been given, or are confused or uncertain about any aspect of your treatment, then you should not proceed with it until clarification is provided.

If you are not confident with the quality of the information, it is approriate to ask questions and even seek an opinion from another dentist.

If for some reason, you don't feel confident or comfortable with the treating dentist, then you should seek advice and treatment from another dentist.
